Our goal

At the #AlcarazISS project, we look to learn and connect with the world's most important space complex: the International Space Station. Students and teachers from I.E.S. Pedro Simón Abril decided to create this project to learn and discover new things, and together, we have achieved major milestones.

Join us in this journey where we are going to connect with someting so far but so close: space.

We achieved acquisition of signal during the pandemic. Here is how we did it.

On 5 Aug, 2020, we achieved Acquisition of Signal. 6 project members, all students, achieved AOS from the ISS at Alcaraz Castle.

Despite all the COVID measures that didn't let us meet all together, we were able to achieve one of our goals: receiving signals from the International Space Station. Only 6 people could meet together, so we were limited, but that didn't stop our curiosity and scientific interest.

We succesfully received some images from the MAI-75 SSTV event held by ARISS and celebrated in August of 2020.

With a software defined radio and a handheld radio, we were able to receive and decode in real time the SSTV images sent by the ISS.

Discover Alcaraz

Click on the towers to discover our town.

With thousands of year of history, Alcaraz is one of the most important towns of Spain. Located in southern Spain, it has received the Starlight Certificate as one of the best places in Spain to observe the sky.

Discover ARISS

ARISS (Amateur Radio on the International Space Station) is the organization that has been organising activities for more than 20 years, such as:

  • SSTV events where people can receive and decode images sent from the ISS.

  • Contacts between the ISS and schools, high schools or organizations, which allow students or members of an organizations to have a contact with an ISS crewmember.

  • Installation of repeaters and radio beacons on the ISS, which allow the ISS to repeat signals sent by people.

This project has been possible thanks to the activities organised by ARISS.
